We’ve partnered with the Coaches of Color Initiative, which was co-founded by renowned coach & author, Matt Fitzgerald through his 80/20 Foundation as well as San Francisco Bay Area coach & Run Local ambassador Bertrand Newson. In 2022 they welcomed Coach Jessica Schnier as their first apprenticeship grantee to advance their careers in the industry.
Coach Jessica will lead California Coast 500 participants through weekly training insights to stay motivated throughout the summer and beyond.
Jessica is a trail runner who enjoys a sprinkle of road races now and again. She is a lifelong runner and began trail running in 2018. Originally from the flatlands of Iowa, Jessica now lives in San Diego, California.
Jessica’s background is in scientific research and education – she has a B.S. in Biology & Environmental Science and a Master’s in Science Education. While at Iowa State, Jessica was a Women’s Captain of the Iowa State University Running Club for 2 years, where her main jobs were to co-create training plans and lead training runs while also creating an inclusive environment for women on the team.
Jessica is a certified ultrarunning coach through UESCA and is the first recipient of the Coaches of Color Initiative (COCI)apprenticeship grant. Through COCI, Jessica has had the opportunity to connect with and shadow some of the top coaches and figures in the running world and has recently launched Smiles & Miles Coaching where she is available to coach athletes from around the world.
